Those days were not
the days where technology was so advanced. Correspondence chess was at its
height of popularity. Although chess tournaments were held at regular
intervals.
Jill sat down on the
chair and started setting the pieces. The board had a few fainted corners of
the dark squares, but at the moment it didn't matter. The kings stood boldly
against each other with fascinating crosses on their heads. The room was silent
as ever , the constant sound of the rotating fan could be heard. He used to be
feared at the local championships , long times ago. Now he wondered even if
anyone knew him there. He used to read in the papers about the championships
going on and the winners. He sometimes used to tell his son how he had made a
piece sacrifice on the king side and beaten the champion in the top table. But
today he felt like he had something in him that he could give to this noble
game.
Suddenly his eye
caught the calendar. Today his son and his wife would be travelling to Paris
from London. He knew he would see them again in exactly 20 days from today. He
played some vague moves on the board and then wandered away into the town to
buy groceries. He had to cook himself. His whole day was then spent preparing
for the presentation which he had to give in the office the day after. His boss
had promised him a promotion if he could have get the party coming the day
after interested in investing in the company. He had found out all the reasons
why other companies would like to invest in the company and was prepared for
the cross questioning also. He thought he had done all he could to prepare for
the presentation. His room was filled of the prizes and trophies given by his
office. He slept for a while in afternoon. He woke up around three hours later
and then freshened up a bit. Then he thought that he could clean his son's room
just to pass some time. When he was at the junction of his room and his son's
he saw the board again and he stood still. For a few minutes nothing moved. The
board was still set up as he had left it. He had almost forgot everything about
the board. He saw the position , just for the sake of calculating he tried to
calculate some forced wins for white. He sat down but didn't move a piece. Just
waited for something to click in his mind. He thought about the obvious moves
first, then looked for some moves which were hard to see. Then without touching
the board he got up to make a cup of coffee. He had lost the track of time, so
he looked up to the clock and suddenly something caught his eye on the board.
